FAQs

All About Gold

Why do your gold prices fluctuate?

You may wonder why the price of some gold jewellery is fixed and others seem to fluctuate from day-to-day. High quality gold jewellery is priced based on the workmanship (time and complexity) in creation of the piece and the weight of gold used.

The jewellery industry operates on the "market price",  which is constantly fluctuating. For this reason, phone or email quotes are only valid for the day they are issued.

In general the lighter the item's weight or lower the purity, the less likely it is to be affected by fluctuating prices and we can confidently offer them at a set price based on their workmanship. You can find the current day's gold price through various online sources, banks, commodity brokers, and precious metal dealers.

What is a Karat / How is gold rated?

Gold quality is measured by its purity, and is denoted in karats, with 24K being the highest quality available with a purity rating of at least 99.95%. 22K gold has purity of 91.66 to 95.83% and 18K has purity of 75.00 to 79.16%.

The highest quality gold products have the most intense and brilliant "gold" colours, whereas the lower karat golds are mixed with other metals. These mixtures often result in distinct and desirable colours such as rose gold and white gold.

Higher karat gold jewellery may also be ideal choice for those who are prone to allergic reactions to non-pure metals. If you are suffering from irritation or rashes from earrings, rings, or other jewellery, you may want to look at the karat rating of the item.

Gold is the most malleable of all metals, as a result, higher quality gold products tend to be softer and may be more prone to scratching and deformation.
